Major in YouTube anyone?

Those of you who've ventured into the Help Desk area or been to see Bob and I you'll know that we have CNN playing all day...non-stop...permanently...repeating the same news over and over...and over again. Just sometimes a segment comes up that has me wheeling my chair to my doorframe to that I can peer out and watch. This morning such a piece had me doing just that. The reporters were interviewing a professor and students at Pitzer College regarding a new class for this semester in...yep, you guessed it - YouTube!

I've included several links to articles about it, some scathing, some seeing it as interesting, some regarding it as part of the course and the way our education and popular technology are meshing more and more.

  • YouTube 101, Just Because

  • Into the world of YouTube

  • College Offers YouTube 101 Course (with YouTube video - Oh, the irony of it)

  • And of course the CNN interview and segment was recorded on...anyone, anyone?

That video is interesting! I actually was looking on YouTube to see if I could find someone reading my book I am using as a basis for my lesson plan. I did not find what I wanted, however, PBS website had it! The part I find that hits home the hardest for me is that while posting on youtube to the world you are exposing yourself to the public at large. Like what Kelli was saying about the internet and stalkers etc. this is a factor I would be very cautious with in teaching. How would a teacher explain an abduction (and at worst case murder) of a student because the predator found out where the child went to school from a youtube video used as a class project? How do you use the technology and stay safe at the same time?
